Hawaii mourns loss of Tamayo Perry, waterman and Pirates of the Caribbean actor

Perry, 49, was attacked by a shark while surfing on Oahu's North Shore

Renowned Pipeline rider and lifeguard Tamayo Perry has been identified as the victim of a fatal shark attack. The 49-year-old was attacked on Oahu's North Shore on Sunday afternoon and died from his injuries. Perry was a well-known waterman and had appeared in several films, including Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Blue Crush. He was also an eight-year veteran of Honolulu Ocean Safety.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi released a statement expressing his condolences and praising Perry for his service to the community. "Tamayo Perry was a beloved member of our community and a true waterman," Blangiardi said. "He will be deeply missed by all who knew him." Perry's death is the first fatal shark attack on Oahu since 2015.

The attack occurred at around 2:45 p.m. on Sunday near Kaena Point. Perry was surfing with a friend when he was attacked by a shark, believed to be a tiger shark. Perry's friend was able to pull him to shore, but he died from his injuries at a local hospital.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources has closed the area to swimming, surfing, and other water activities while they investigate the attack. The public is advised to stay out of the water in the area until further notice.
